The study of outdoor lighting is much more than just a mere technical investigation.
Because light and places belong to each other, they are intimately joined and can be understood only through their mutual relation.
For this reason the lighting system in the green areas have to respect the biological cycles of the plants and their colors.
Lighting should respect darkness, that should never be integrally revealed, in order to play with shadows and backlighting, emphasizing the poetry of nature.
For the exterior lighting of buildings, the lamps and the lighting system shouldn’t alter the correct perception of surface materials and architectural geometries.
For the public areas, we must pay particular attention to the safety rules and to the issues of maintenance and vandalism.
However it is also necessary to give to the light an emotional, evocative value, to highlight the peculiarity of places while keeping coherence among the urban context.
The lighting equipment working outdoor must guarantee the maximum reliability and duration over time, despite the great environmental stress (atmospheric agents, mechanical powder and bugs penetration, stress from stamping and traffic, vandalism).
Low environmental impact and energy saving lamps should be chosen, following the GreenLighting ethics.
